Intel designs and, unusually for its industry, also manufactures processors. Its x86 chips have powered personal computers and servers for decades, an installed base that still generates most of the company's revenue. The strategic bet is on foundry services: opening its factories to outside customers and reclaiming manufacturing leadership from Asian rivals, backed by enormous capital spending and government support for domestic chipmaking.
